Phone setup

Install less. Test more.

The useful list is not every app people mention—it is the small set you can actually open, verify, and use when you land.

The practical stack

Six roles. Fewer surprises.

  1. 01

    Alipay

Start here for mobile payment and Shanghai’s English Easy Go service hub. Add your international card before departure.

  2. 02

    WeChat

A useful payment backup and a gateway to venue mini-programs. Complete setup while you can receive verification messages.

  3. 03

    Amap / Gaode

Multilingual navigation now includes pre-arrival, airport, public transport, communication-card, and emergency guidance.

  4. 04

    DiDi

English ride-hailing. Save your hotel’s Chinese name and address for the first trip.

  5. 05

    Railway 12306

China’s official rail booking service. Only install it if your itinerary includes trains.

  6. 06

    A translation app

Choose one that supports camera and offline language packs; test it on a screenshot before you fly.

A 15-minute ready check

Do one real task in each app.

Search your hotel in Chinese. Add a payment card. Open the ride-hailing screen. Download an offline translation pack. A successful test is more useful than an installed icon.

Common questions

Quick answers

Do I need every app before flying?

No. Payment, maps, transport, and translation matter most. Add rail or venue apps only when your itinerary requires them.

Should I keep my normal map app?

Yes as a reference, but use a current China-focused map for local entrances, public transport, and navigation. Save important Chinese addresses in advance.

What should I test before departure?

Card linking, login verification, a hotel search, an example ride request without confirming, and one camera translation.
